SARS-COV-2 ( COVID 19 ) RT PCR

Test details

SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) RT PCR test is the most widely used diagnostic technique for detecting acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. It enables the direct amplification of Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 RNA (genetic material) from the respiratory sample in patients suspected of COVID-19. Significance of the test: SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) RT PCR testing is incorporated as part of a comprehensive approach to identify people infected with SARS-CoV-2 so that actions can be taken to slow and stop the transmission of the virus.

Test required for

A positive result indicates the presence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. But, the clinical correlation with patient’s history and other diagnostic information is necessary to determine infection status. A negative result does not preclude SARS-CoV-2 infection and should not be used as the sole basis for patient management decisions. The negative result must be correlated with clinical observations, patient history, and epidemiological information. False-negative results may occur if the viruses are present at a level that is below the analytical sensitivity of the assay.
